Needed tools:

Xenofex is recommended but not required.

A preset heart shape.

If you don't already have one, I have prepared one for you.

Preset heart

Click the print button on your browser to print this tutorial.

Make a new image 400 X 400 Transparent.

Activate your shape tool and select your heart shape with NONE of the options checked.

In your color palette, set your stoke to NULL and your fill to red. Place your mouse at the upper left corner of your image and drag it down to the lower right corner.

Press CTRL + A to select all. Press CTRL + F to float.

Apply Cutout with the following settings.

Deselect.

In your layer palette, make a duplicate of this layer.

You should now have 2 layers. Layer 1 and Copy of Layer 1. Make sure that Copy of Layer 1 is active.

Apply Xenofex Puzzle with the following settings.

(If you don't have Xenofex, click undo to get your selection back and save the selection to alpha channel. Use your draw tool with foreground set to black, background set to NULL, color set to black, size set to 2, line type set to freehand and draw a loose scribble on your heart. Load your selection from Alpha, invert and delete. Deselect.)

Your heart should now look something like this.

Activate your Magic wand tool and set the tolerance to about 83.

Start from the bottom of your heart. Click on one of the sections of your heart to select it.

Click Layers < Promote to layer or press CTRL + SHIFT + P.

Your layer palette should now look like this.

Turn off ALL layers except Copy of Layer 1, press Delete.

The piece that you selected should now be gone.

With your magic wand still active, select another section of your heart.

Promote to layer, turn off the new promoted layer, activate Copy of layer 1, delete, select a new section.

Repeat this process until ALL of the sections are deleted. Your layer palette should look something like this.

Turn on all of your layers.

Activate layer 1 and send it to the top.

Save your image.

Open Animation shop.

Click File > Preferences > General Program Preferences.

Click on the Layered Files tab.

Set your preferences as shown below and click OK.

Open your image. Press CTRL + A to select all. Press CTRL + C to copy. Press CTRL + V to paste as a new animation. You should now have 2 identical animations on your screen.

Select one of the animations which you will use as your main animation. Press CTRL + A to select all. Right click and select Frame Properties from the drop down menu.

The default number here is 10. Please change it to 25 and click ok.

Select the last frame. Click on the last frame to be sure that ONLY the last frame is selected.

Click Effects > Insert Image Effect.

Select the Explode effect with the settings set as shown below.

You should now have the speed of all of the frames BEFORE the effect set to 25 and after the effect set to 33.

Please activate the other animation. Select the last frame

Apply the SAME effect but this time check the reverse direction and click ok.

Select all the frames that have the effect applied. In this case it would be 26 thru the last frame (see the image above).

Press CTRL + C to copy.

Activate your main animation. Select your last frame.

Right click and select Paste > After Current Frame.

Select your last frame again. Click on it to be sure that only the last one is selected.

Right click. Select Frame Properties and set the speed to 50. Click OK.

Press SHIFT + S to bring up the resize window. Resize your image by at least 50%.

Save your image.
