Slats
by kim@pixelbit.com

This tutorial was inspired by another that I saw in a class, however, inspiration is as far as it goes, the effect is very different.

Needed tools:
Eye candy 4000
The Slats image.
This pattern

Open a colorful image. It can be anything, flowers, etc. As long as it's colorful.

Layers > Load mask. Select the slats image with these settings.

In your layer palette, delete the mask layer.
Right click on the group layer and select Ungroup layers.

Your image should look something like this.

Apply Inner bevel using these settings.

Apply Drop Shadow using the settings below.

Use your dropper tool and select two colors from your image

Change the foreground to Foreground-background gradient.
Repeat set to 1, angle is 133.

Use your Paintbrush tool with the settings below.
Make a new layer.

With your mouse make a sweeping motion all over your image.
The idea here is to give it a HINT of color

Make a new layer
Use your paintbrush tool,
lower the density to 9.
Set your foreground to a pattern like the one shown below

Sweep your mouse across your image in the same fashion

Move the layer with the slats to the top.

In your layer palette lower the opacity to all of your paintbrush layers. I lowered mine to 50% but you can choose the setting you like best.

Set your foreground back to Solid color and make a note of the color that you used here.

In your layer palette, Merge Visible.
Image > Add picture frame. Select a frame that had a rough edge.

Your image now has two layers, the top layer is the frame.
Apply cutout with these settings, being sure that you set the color to the same color as your foreground.

Apply Inner Bevel with the same settings.

Merge Flatten again and you're done.

An alternative... Reopen the tube that u started with.
Duplicate your image , close the original to preserve it.
 Image > Grayscale.
Press SHIFT + B and lower the brightness to about -75.

In order for an image to have grayscale and color on the same image,
the grayscale color depth must be increased to 16 million

Set your grayscale image aside for the moment, lets get back to the colorful one.

After applying drop shadow, copy.  Paste as a new layer onto your grayscale. (CTRL + L)
Pssst, The grey and color should be lined up. if they're not, use the mover tool to align them.

Follow the rest of the tutorial as written making sure that the
slats layer is on top in the layer palette before merging visible
