Feathers

Open a new image 750 X 562, Transparent.

Make a new layer. Rename "leg1".

Selections > Load from Disk > 01-leg.sel.

Flood Fill with the pegasus-pattern.bmp. Size set to 100%.

Click on your retouch tool. Set Darken and Lighten to the settings below.

**HINT** If at ANY time you feel that you have darkened an area too much, you can always use your right mouse key to lighten

Use your right mouse key to darken. Darken the left side of the leg as shown below.

Deselect.

Make your smudge tool active with the settings shown below.

With very short strokes, work your way around the edges, pulling the fur out to look more realistic

Make a new layer. Rename "wing1".

**HINT** To make a horse instead of Pegasus, just omit the wings and feathers.

Selections > Load from Disk > 02.wing.sel.

Darken the left side of the wing slightly.

Deselect. Use the smudge tool to put the fur around the edges.

Make a new layer. Rename "feathers1".
Open your PSP browser and select the feather that you downloaded.
You are welcome to use the one that I used. Just save it and tube it.
Press SHIFT + D to duplicate. Close the original to preserve it.

Click Colors > Colorize and set both numbers in the colorize window to 0. Press OK.

Resize so the feathers that you are using are the size that you like.

Press CTRL + C to copy.

Back to your Pegasus image, Press CTRL + L to paste as a new layer. Use your deformation tool to resize and rotate. Position this feather on the top of the wing. Press CTRL + L again and use your deformation again to resize and rotate. Repeat once more for a total of three feathers.
In your layer palette, turn off the leg 1 layer,
merge visible. rename the merged layer wing1.
Turn the leg layer back on.

Move your feathers1 layer under your wing1 layer.

In your layers palette, activate the wing1 1 layer again.

 

Make a new layer. Rename "leg2".

Selections > Load from Disk > 03.leg.sel.

Darken the left and bottom of the leg slightly.

Deselect. Smudge the edges.

 

Make a new layer called "rock".

Selections > Load from Disk > 04-rock.sel.

Deselect.

Make a new layer. Rename "body1".

Selections > Load from Disk > 05-body.sel.

Darken the bottom edge and partially up the left edge.

Deselect and smudge the edges.

Make a new layer. Rename "body2".

Selections > Load from Disk > 06-body.sel.

Darken along the right edge along the neck. Make the darkened area a little thicker where the head will be. See the image below.

Deselect and smudge

IF you darkened too much of the body2, you can clone it to repair it quickly.

Using your Clone Brush tool with the following setting.

RIGHT click on either side of the line. LEFT click on the top part of the line, leaving the bottom part darkened. You may have to repeat several times.

Make a new layer. Rename "head".

Selections > Load from Disk > 07-head.sel.

Make a new layer called "face".

Selections > Load from Disk > face.sel.

Flood with a med brown color. Deselect.

Activate the head layer. Darken just under the eye and make a make a half moon shape with your darkening tool on the jaw bone to bring out the jaw. You will need to lower the size in your darken settings just for this step.

Make a new layer. Rename mane.

Selections > Load from Disk > 08-mane.sel.

Click Colors > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast.

Change the brightness to -98.

Click OK and deselect.

Use your retouch tool with the following settings.
Deselect and smudge.

Make little baby strokes to flare out the mane.

Make a new layer. Rename "tail".

Selections > Load from Disk > 09-tail.

Click Colors > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast.

Change the brightness to -98.

Click OK and deselect.

Use your smudge tool to flare out the tail.

 

Make a new layer. Rename "leg3".

Selections > Load from Disk > 10-leg.sel

Darken along the upper left edge and along the left side.

Deselect. Smudge.

Set your clone brush tool to the settings below. (Same as before)

Make sure that you use a combination of lighten, darken and smudge
to make the area shown blow appear as one piece instead of 2.

Make a new layer. Rename "wing2".

Selections > Load from Disk > 11-wing.sel.

Darken in the area shown below to give the appearance of thickness on the right edge and top.

Deselect. Smudge.

Refer to your feather image.

Press CTRL + C to copy.

Add a new layer, Rename "hooves"

Selections > Load from Disk > 12-hoof.sel

Flood Fill with the cork pattern.

Deselect.

Selections > Load from Disk > 13-hoof.sel

Flood Fill with the cork pattern.

Deselect.

Change the canvas size to 750 X 750
Make sure the DOWN position arrow is checked. This will give you lots of room to add the feathers.

Make your feather active. Copy and paste as a new layer. Use your deformation tool to rotate and place into position.
Repeat until you have all of the feathers you need and places properly, as shown below.

If you would like to make a still image, merge visible now, resize to your liking. If you do resize, be sure to sharpen as well and you're done.

You now have a choice of saving as a transparent gif or as  jpg. To save as a transparent gif, please visit my Transparent gif tutorial. It will show you where to go from here.

To animate, Delete the wing 1 layer.
In your layer palette, close ALL layers except the feathers layers that you just added. Merge and rename feathers2.
In your layer palette, move the feathers layer below the wing2 layer. Right click on the wing2 layer and merge down.
Your merged layer is still named Feathers 2.Make sure feathers 2 is at the TOP of the layer palette.

turn OFF feathers 2 , turn ON all other layers, and merge visible. You now have only 2 layers feathers2 and merged.
 In your layer palette, duplicate the feathers 2 layer.

With the top layer active, use your deformation tool.
Press and hold BOTH shift and CTRL. Grab the node along the LEFT edge and push in and up slightly.

Make the original feathers 2 layer active and duplicate.
Make the BOTTOM feather 2 layer active. Repeat the deformation but this time, pull the node OUT and DOWN


 

Make the merged layer active, copy and paste as new. In the original image, delete the merged layer.
You now have 2 separate image, the body and the wings. Crop the transparent area off of the winds.


Save the both images in psp format.
Open Animation Shop. Set the properties to "Show each layer in a separate frame" and click ok.

Open a NEW transparent image 750 X 750 transparent. Duplicate frames twice for a total of three frames.
Open the wing image, Select all, copy.
go to your transparent image, select all and paste into selected (CTRL + E). Place the wings at the top of the image.

Open the body image, Duplicate frames twice for a total of three frames.
select all, copy.
Back to your main image, select all and paste the body onto the winds

Activate the wings image again, select all and copy.
Activate the main image, select all and paste the second wing onto the other side of the body.

Double click on the crop tool to open the crop properties, Click on Surround OPAQUE and click ok.
On the toolbar, click the CROP button to apply the crop.
Two steps left.
Select all. Press ALT + ENTER to change the speed to 30.
Resize to your liking.
PSST..if you resize, select all, File > Export > to Paint shop Pro.
In PSP sharpen all three layers and update back to Animation shop.

Select frame 2, copy
right click on frame 3. Paste > after current.
That's it. you're done.
